There are several classified subspecies of the common box turtle (Terrapene carolina), including the Gulf Coast box turtle (Terrapene carolina major), the Eastern box turtle (T. c. carolina), and the three-toed box turtle (T. c. triungus). The Gulf Coast box turtle has a limited range compared to the other subspecies, and ranges only from Coastal Louisiana through Panhandle Florida. The Gulf Coast box turtle is also typically larger than the inland subspecies.
