Texas Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum)

Texas Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum)

These interesting lizards are found in the western U.S. naturally, but there are a few established populations in the Southeast. This little guy was found among the dunes of one of South Carolina's coastal islands where a population has persisted since the 1940's. Although in some cases they could be classified as an invasive species, in this situation they aren't thought to be disrupting native species' populations. Many locals are fond of these spikey critters and it's easy to see why!
