The Florida pine snake (Pituophis melanoleucus mugitus) is a large terrestrial species that spends much of its time underground in burrows dug themselves or in those dug by small mammals or gopher tortoises. Like many other large-bodied snakes in the Southeast, researchers believe Florida pine snakes are declining in numbers, partly due to habitat destruction.
