The Gulf Coast box turtle (Terrapene carolina major) is classified as a subspecies of the common box turtle (T. carolina). The Gulf Coast box turtle has a limited range compared to the Eastern and three-toed box turtles (T. c. carolina and T. c. triungus), ranging only from Coastal Louisiana through Panhandle Florida.
