Prior to European settlement, native pine forests consisted of widely spaced trees allowing sunlight to reach the forest floor. Forests which are intensively managed for pulp/fiber consist of densely planted trees resulting in little sunlight reaching the understory. In conjunction with other management practices, many pine plantations are biological deserts.
