Couch's Spadefoot (Scaphiopus couchii)

Couch's Spadefoot (Scaphiopus couchii)

It is hard to believe that amphibians can survive in the harsh desert climates, but remarkably, several species make their homes in the desert sands. Most lay dormant for much of the year, patiently awaiting the summer rains. When sufficient rains occur, amphibians exit in mass to breed in temporary pools that dot the landscape. Many species, such as the Couch's spadefoot, metamorphose quickly to escape the drying pools and seek shelter before the landscape dries once again.
