Viceroy (Limenitis archippus) on Purple Coneflower (Echinacea pallida)
The viceroy is often described as a non-toxic mimic of the monarch butterfly although it is now known that both species are toxic, making this a case of Müllerian mimicry. This form of mimicry is when two or more toxic species exhibit similar color patterns. This similarity benefits both species because predators only have to learn to avoid one pattern.
