Gopher tortoise populations have declined throughout their range and are federally protected in several states. Habitat destruction and poor land management practices are just part of the problem. Urbanization, especially in Florida, forces tortoises to live in a fragmented landscape where road mortality is a serious threat. Intensive management and protection of remaining populations is a must if this species is to survive.
