Keystone species

Gopher tortoises are considered a keystone species in the longleaf pine ecosystem because their burrows provide important habitat and shelter to a wide variety of species that occur in the Coastal Plain. The longleaf pine ecosystem is fire dependent, and tortoise burrows provide shelter to animals fleeing the frequent fires. Click here to see one of the many species that use gopher tortoise burrows.
