Habitat Needs

Flatwoods salamanders live in a very fire dependent system. Without fire, the pine flatwoods and savannas are quickly invaded by dense shrub vegetation in both the uplands and in the breeding ponds. This thick shurb layer not only creates a very closed canopy, but it also causes wetlands to dry up faster or, in some cases, not hold water at all, leaving breeding amphibians with fewer options. Unfortunately, this is what is happening for many of the remaining flatwoods salamander populations.
